This is what I discovered in recent years and seems to work.

1. Know your audience. Children love to read, what they are interested. Start with a theme you like. For example, I teach black children by 75%. So I can reach the most children to read that Martin Luther King.

2. Give them the address of a person must know their own history and the history of others. Ask a few questions. They would be surprised to see that small children something about someone who know as famous as Martin Luther King himself. This should help to start.

3. Give them a few paragraphs, but in the end the page in a very exciting place. (It is curious that, turn to the page on the left.) Then there are the hands and want to know where the rest is.

4. Now they have to predict what will happen. They love it. Creativity developed. Repeat the process until you reach the end of the story, sums up the biography, etc.

5. In the last part of a piece of A to Z (do not know his name.). Make each lettercan be the alphabet (except Q and Z), a train, a historical fact, the scene, or whatever you want to stop to read. For example, C = Civil Rights Movement.

This is a great combination of ideas for the children to read and read carefully.
